Artist Statement:

Marked Up is a bold, abstract homage to the fall seasons of my childhood — a time that brought me unexpected comfort and calm. The color palette is a direct nod to that time of year, when the weather softened, the routines shifted, and the world took on a different kind of energy.

Autumn meant following my brother to fall baseball games, feeling relief from the extremes of St. Louis weather, and experiencing the quiet thrill of Halloween — a day that gave me permission to be someone else, even if just for a night. It wasn’t about the calendar; the true arrival of fall was marked by the sound of dry leaves scraping along the pavement and the scent of a distant bonfire lingering in the cool air.

Created with blending and foam brush techniques, Marked Up combines soft transitions with sharp, defined edges. These visual elements reflect the layered nature of fall — the warmth of firelight, the shadows of early dusk, and the subtle shift toward darkness that defines the season. It’s an abstract representation of nostalgia, change, and the strange comfort of becoming something new.
