Artist Statement:

Orange and Black is an abstract tribute to the fall seasons of my childhood — a time marked by comfort, color, and quiet transformation. The choice of palette is a direct nod to those memories: cool air, fading sunlight, and the anticipation of Halloween. Autumn always brought with it a sense of calm — a break from the extremes of St. Louis weather and the rhythm of school and routine.

I remember following my brother to fall league baseball games, soaking in the atmosphere without needing to participate. I remember Halloween not as a costume party, but as an unspoken invitation to become someone else, even just for a night — a small but powerful kind of freedom.

For me, the first day of fall doesn’t arrive on a calendar. It arrives when you hear dry leaves scraping across the pavement and catch the distant scent of a bonfire drifting through the crisp air.

Created using blending and foam brush techniques, Black and Orange uses contrast, movement, and layered texture to evoke the warmth of firelight, the sharpness of cool air, and the fading glow of dusk as it gives way to night. It’s an abstract reflection of childhood wonder, seasonal change, and the strange beauty of becoming something new in familiar surroundings.
